Wine Barrel Gourmet
Question: What is one thing in life better than brownies? Answer: Brownies made with wine as a key ingredient!
Wine Barrel Gourmet is a family operated business who produces wine flavored soup mixes, wine sauce and dressing mixes, wine pasta mixes, whole grain bread mixes and healthy cookbooks. Want desserts? They also offer Lemon Chardonnay Tea Cake, Mulled Wine Muffin dessert mixes and a Chocolate Merlot Brownie Mix. The best part is their products are healthy and all-natural!
I was given a package of the Chocolate Merlot Brownie mix to review. The mix makes a dark chocolate brownie that is rich in flavor. To make the brownies you simply add eggs, low-fat yogurt or canola oil, and 1/4 cup of Merlot wine. Each package makes 16 brownies.
Results: These brownies were really good. They were rich and I loved the mix of dark chocolate and Merlot. The taste is definitely more sophisticated than a typical brownie, and also much more flavorful. The Merlot taste was evident, but not overpowering.

Pros: They are only 77-88 calories each (depending on the ingredients used)! They are rich with antioxidants, are made with whole wheat flour, and contain no saturated or trans fat. Their products are made in the USA!! And, oh yeah, they are delicious!
Cons: The batter is quite thick, so they bake up a bit lumpy. The directions give you an option of preparing with low-fat yogurt or canola oil. I used the oil, but think that the yogurt may have helped make the brownie a little thinner and moister.
