Valentine's Day is always a challenge for me. The holiday is really designed for the woman and finding a good gift for my husband is always a challenge. When in doubt, I fall back on the old cliche' "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach". Need a Valentine's Day gift idea? Think meat!
There are many states who have a signature culinary dish. For North Carolina, the cuisine of choice is barbecue. North Carolina Barbecue Company (NC BBQ) wants the rest of the country to have the opportunity to experience their famous pork BBQ. There are two distinct styles of North Carolina barbecue. NC BBQ presents both styles in the Battle Box. The Battle Box contains two packs of meats, sauces and slaws. Make them both and decide for yourself which style is your favorite.
The Eastern BBQ is smoked in the traditional "Down East" whole hog style. The BBQ is lightly chopped and sauced in a vinegary peppery sauce. The coleslaw is traditional style and slightly sweet. The hot/sweet combo is the essence of the eastern NC BBQ. The Piedmont variety uses only the shoulder of the pig which is slow cooked and smoked with hickory. The meat is not sauced until after it is cooked. The slaw, referred to as "BBQ Slaw, contains ketchup and other spices.My husband loves this type of meal and was very excited to prepare this for dinner. He decided to make the entire Battle Box at once so we could each decided on which style "wins". The preparation was easy. The BBQ is already cooked, you simply have to boil the meat in the pouch. The Eastern and Piedmont meats, sauces, and slaws are designated by color (blue for Eastern and red for Piedmont). After heating the meat, you add sauce to taste. My husband decided to add the slaws to his sandwiches while I ate mine on the side.
Who "won"? My husband voted for the Eastern BBQ. I am not a fan of vinegar and could immediately taste it in the sauce. I LOVED the Piedmont; however, I preferred the Eastern slaw. I guess this means both sides win in our house! Both meats were very tender and we really enjoyed this meal. It was really easy to make and enjoyable to eat. My husband (the designated cook of the house) definitely gave this his approval. As he was tasting the sandwiches, he said, "I really love your blog"!
