It is easy to look at what everyone else has and yearn for the same. There are ways that you can manage your family on less that two incomes and Ditch the Joneses: Discover Your Family outlines how it can be done. The book is authored by Cathi Brese Doebler who aims to show you that you can enjoy your family through financial budgeting and time management.

The book is organized into the following sections:

1. Discovering Your Direction – has you reflect on why you are choosing to read this book and decide what long and short term goals and “must-haves” you want.
2. Getting it Done – focuses on budgeting, ways to save money, and ways to feel connected to a community if you decide not to work
3. Defending Your Decision – focuses on how to explain your decision to others as well as reassure yourself and your family if you start to have second thoughts
4. More to Consider – contains advice from real people who have made similar decisions as outlined in the book

The book is Christian-based and contains bible references as well as suggestions for prayer. Even if you are not a Christian, you will likely find the information in the book helpful. My favorite chapter was “Ways to Save Money”. There were tons of great tips and listed some great suggestions for things I never thought of before. Whether you are a one-income family or are considering becoming one, this book will probably be helpful.  The author does a good job of showing how additional time with family can be more valuable than an additional paycheck.
