Taking a child's temperature can be extremely challenging. If they are already not feeling well, you certainly don't want to add to their discomfort by taking a rectal thermometer. If they have ear infections, they may be less than thrilled with you sticking something in their ear and most young children don't grasp the concept of under the tongue or under the arm pit readings. Exergen has created a fabulous product called a TemporalScanner that allows you to get a reading in a second my sliding the thermometer across the forehead.
I first saw a temporal thermometer when I went to an urgent care center with stomach flu-like symptoms. I was completely thrilled when they took my temperature this way because I was really nauseated and did not want to have to give an oral reading. The thermometer works by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the carotid artery. Research has been positive and shows that the readings are accurate and this less-invasive method of temperature taking is preferred by patients and parents alike! I really love this thermometer. It is incredible easy to use. You have to be careful to press on the forehead completely otherwise the temperature can be slightly off. It runs on 9 volt battery which is easy to change. There is an auto shut off feature so you do not have to worry about the batteries going dead if you forget to shut it down. It beeps when the temperature has registered and the display is clear and easy to read. I like that there are not replaceable parts which means you will not need to continue to make purchases (like ear covers). It retails for less than $50 which is a fantastic price for something that eases my mind and my child's discomfort!
