When I think of the beloved, classic Popeye cartoons I cannot help but to think of his all-time favorite food: spinach. So, it makes sense that America's best known spinach product is Popeye's! The canned spinach comes in three forms: Leaf Spinach, Chopped Spinach, and Leaf Spinach No Salt Added. Allens Vegetables prides itself on the canned spinach and encourages customers to substitute frozen spinach with their version when trying recipes.
Recipe:
Spinach and artichoke dip is my all time favorite appetizer and I could not wait to make up some and see how it measured up to places like TGIFridays and Applebees who have amazing dips. Here is the recipe I used:
Ingredients:
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup sour cream
1 packet (1 oz size) ranch-style dip mix
14oz can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
1 can of Popeye chopped spinach
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Directions
Blend mayo, sour cream and dip; mix together in a large bowl. Add artichoke hearts and spinach; mix well. To serve hot: Stir in 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese; microwave on high 4-5 minutes or until hot, stirring occasionally.
Review: I could not believe it but this dip tasted just as good, if not better, than the kind I have ordered in the restaurant! The spinach was really delicious, even when eaten as a straight side dish. It had a great color to it and the original and chopped versions were unique in their forms. I liked that it was canned, rather than frozen so I did not have to worry about thawing it before use.
This recipe is now officially one of my favorites and I think I will be keeping Popey's spinach on hand from now on! You can check out recipes featuring Popeye's Spinach on their website.
