Family Game Night: Scrabble Alphabet Scoop Review

Five weeks ago my husband and I decided that Fridays were going to be the designated Family Game Night. The kids look forward to it all week and it is a wonderful way for all of us to spend quality time together. Obviously, we jump at any chance to try out a new game and there is no better company to work with than Hasbro when it comes to Family Game Night!

One of their newest games is Scrabble Alphabet Scoop. It is a world building game for ages 6 and up. The objective of the game is to be the first player to successfully spell the word selected by scooping letters out of the Scrabble Alphabet Scoop bowl.  Players each get a card and select the word on the card they will attempt to spell. On the count of three players rush to scoop letters out of the bowl to spell the word they chose to spell on their playing card. If the player scoops a fly they have to return their letters to the bowl and start over. The first player to properly spell the word on their card wins! The game features varying game-plays which levels the playing field between kids and parents.

Review:  Racing games start off as very exciting in our house, but they tend to end in arguments. "That's not fair", "You knocked my tiles over", and "Pick that up" were heard frequently throughout the game play. Competitiveness aside, the game was pretty fun. It was great that you had an option of choosing which of the five words on the card to spell. Since my daughter knows her letters but cannot read, we allowed her to choose three letter words while my son chose four and my husband and I chose five letter words. This means that it was pretty fair and everyone had a chance to win.  It can get a little messy when everyone is trying for the tiles at the same time. It is a maximum of four players, but may be a bit more tolerable with 2-3 players so there are, literally, less hands in the pot.
