Fun and Original Birthday Cakes by Maisie Parish features some really amazing cake designs that would have your birthday guests talking about cake until your next party. The book shows a world beyond rose decorated sheet cakes and amazes you with three-dimensional designs.
The book features recipes, modeling tips, and decorating how-tos. There are cake designs with step-by-step directions and pictures for cakes for people of all ages.There are even a couple of easier-to-accomplish cupcake designs that even a beginner cake decorator could accomplish.
Review: The cakes featured in this book are truly amazing. I have only dabbled in gumpaste (or sugarpaste as it is referred to in the book) a little bit. It is a more advanced technique but if you are truly interested in learning how to make 3-D characters, then this book would be worth it. There are no buttercream designs so if that is your passion, you may want to pass on the book. There are some really nice tutorials, however, for the beginner and more difficult designs for those looking for a challenge.
