Synopsis: The Sigh, by Marjane Satrapi, is an illustrated short story hardcover book written for individuals of all ages. Rose is one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day, Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but the father fails to find one for her. She lets out a sign in resignation and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. However, the story reminds that every debt has to be paid and every gift has a price. The Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant's daughter to a secret and distant palace.
Review: I read this book to my children. We were able to read the entire story in one sitting and my kids were both engaged. The book had a love story, which pleased my daughter, and some violence which peaked my son's interest. Although the book is designated for individuals of all ages, the violence is a bit too graphic for a really young child. My children are 8 and 6 and appreciated the literal story, while older children and adults can, perhaps, enjoy the underlying meaning(s) behind the fable. The illustrations were simple yet enhanced the story and helped keep my children interested. Once the story was over, I asked my kids what they thought. My 8 year old son stated, "It was okay. No, I guess it was actually pretty good". My 6 year old daughter "loved it"!
