When a bride and groom are planning their big day and dreaming of their “happily ever after”, they often get caught up in the glamour of weddings and the ideals of marriage and forget that marriage can be tough. When you get married, you are starting a brand new family with two individuals who may not see everything eye to eye. The book Divorce-Proof Your Marriage Before You Say “I Do”: Seven Essential Conversations explores multiple conversations it is important to have before the rings go on the finger to make sure there are no surprises later and that differences can either be accepted by both parties or compromises can be made.
As a therapist myself, I can’t tell you how many couples I have seen that were having problems years into their marriage that could have been dealt with in the beginning. For example, a husband wanted a divorce because the wife does not want to have children. I wanted to scream, “Why was this not discussed before you got married!!” The book covers seven important topics in an easy to read format :
Idiosyncrasies (you know those little habits your mate has that can drive you up a wall)
Money
Children & Pets
Core Values
Friends and Family
Sex & Gender Roles
Communication
Review: The book is nicely organized with full explanations for why each topic should lead to a discussion, real-life stories that help illustrate the importance of each topic, and a list of questions you should be asking your fiance’ and yourself. Of course, there are also nice recommendations for how to handle these conversations, when to compromise and when not to based on your own beliefs, and how to strengthen the relationship. This is a really great book and it is something I would recommend for individuals who are in a serious relationship and planning the big step.
