Do your kids admire the world of texting but are too young to even consider owning a phone? Hallmark is introducing Text Bands that will allow your child to have fun with texting without needing an expensive phone and texting plan. Text Bands are a brand-new way for kids to let friends know what’s on their mind. Text Bands allow kids to send text messages wristband to wristband, expressing themselves and spreading encouragement in a fun, new way. How? Kids enter up to 10 characters into the screen on the band and bump fists or shake hands to pass the message. The bands will light up and the messages will transfer from band to band.
Review: I received two Text Bands to review. The straps are made from a silicone material and they have an easy closure so little ones won't require assistance getting them on. There is an on-off switch on the back which helps preserve the life of the battery. To get the band ready to begin texting, you need to hold down the middle button until a cursor begins blinking. Then, your child can start texting by using the right and left buttons to find the letters and characters they want to include. It does take quite a bit of time and patience to find the characters you want to use, something for which I have none.
However, since it is a kid's toy I set my son and daughter up to see how they liked the bands.
They are both new to spelling so they found using the buttons to find the right character to be a bit frustrating. By the time one would finish their word, they would have to wait for the other person and the first person's band would shut off into power mode. After numerous tries, they finally were coordinated enough to get a word each but they tried fist bumping and high-fiving with no success...the words did not transfer. I encouraged them to keep trying but they quickly lost interest and moved on to other toys. Looks like this may be more appropriate for older kids who have a bit more skills with spelling, a bit more power to their high-fives, and more patience.
